Immersion is putting together an industry working group related to haptic standards. This group includes companies and academic institutions across the haptics ecosystem and is broadly focused on aligning the most appropriate and effective ways to foster standards in haptics.

Our agreed-upon mandate:

We are a group of business entities in the haptic technology industry including hardware manufacturers, middleware and application developers, and companies that work across all levels of the haptic technology stack. Although we work in different areas of haptics, we all agree that haptics is ready for standardization. We are committed to identifying the problems that can be solved using standardization, including but not limited to, interoperability (breaking down ‘walled gardens’ for content creators and users alike), licensing issues, quality and performance metrics, APIs, and codecs.

We look forward to collaborating with each other, both within and outside standards development organizations (SDOs), to standardize haptics as well as to foster a growing ecosystem of haptic technology that ultimately benefits all stakeholders along the value chain. We welcome companies and academic institutions that can contribute to this effort.

The group currently has members from Immersion, Apple, Boreas, Cirrus Logic, College of Charleston, Dialog Semiconductor, Facebook, Google, Lofelt, TDK Americas, and University of Waterloo. We meet once every two weeks.
